Beauty on a Budget: Essence of Beauty Crease Brush Review

A new friend of mine asked me to to get some Essence of Beauty brushes for her this week. She asked for a particular set which was the dual crease brush. As I was doing her shopping I noticed that the brushes looked pretty good and I knew that these are a cult favorite of my sweet mate, 'Nes, at Nessasary Makeup and that was good enough for me to want to try them!

These cost $4.99 USD and are basically a dual package of mini crease brushes. The style reminds me of Bobbi Brown brushes with the wooden handle.

The size of these intrigued me as they appear to be more a smudger style brush then a crease brush but hey it was worth trying for the price tag! The first brush is a tiny dome shape that reminds me of a Mally Beauty brush I own but the Mally brush is a bit more fuller where as this is smaller.

I didn't expect this to do much as it was way too small to properly work my crease area. I'm used to using MAC's 224 and 227 on my crease. Present me with this tiny thing and I'm at a loss how I should be using it. But I happily tried it out and I must say it fits into the contour of my crease brilliantly and works a treat at blending shadows. I found that it actually gave me more management over the brush and bristles since it was far smaller then what I'm used too. I also experienced less fall out because the brush was so tiny. It also worked well on defining the v of my eye and blending inwards.

As you can see I'm used to blending with a much larger brush!

It's quite a multitasking brush because I can use it on the v of my eye, within my crease, and also to line my bottom lash line with my shadow.

The second brush with the package is even smaller then the first. It's a step up from an eyeliner brush. This too worked surprisely well. It didn't do that great a job blending the color completely but it worked fabulously defining the v of my eye and working the my color half way across my crease for contrast.

I felt like both brushes gave me a bit more control over the look I was creating and I successfully manged to create an interesting look by contrasting a lighter shade of shadow all over my eye and a darker shade of shadow across part of my crease and v.

Much to my delight neither brush shed a bristle the entire time I was using them and the brushes are very soft. The handles are mini size but again I felt like the handles being so small gave me much more control over what I was creating! It was kind of like having a pencil grasped tightly between my hands and it was nice and steady as I worked.

As you can see below my outer eye is a shimmering light brown beige that contrasts nicely with the gold amber shadow I used. I created the look using the larger of the two crease brushes and proceeded to line my lower lash line with the smaller of the brushes!

Overall, for the price, these were most definately an interesting little find and I'm generally curious about the rest of the brushes in the Essence of Beauty Collection!

I can't help but give these a Muse Approved Seal for purchase!

Boil Boil, Toil and Trouble! Undeye Potions and Lotions!

This year I turned 30. OH MY GOD! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Sorry had to get that out of my system!

Moving on........

When you turn 30 I think maybe you're faced with your lack of immortality. It's like suddenly a light bulb switches on the top of your head and you realize you're not going to be cute forever and wrinkles, a thing of the past, are now part of your present and future life!

JEEBUS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

So this might be boring for some of you. I find it extremely boring to walk onto a blog that's discussing anti-aging creams! Keeping that in mind I'm going to keep this as brief as I possibly can!

I've been mudding around with at least 20 eye creams lately, seriously. It first started in December sometime when I woke up and noticed that my eyes were puffy. Mmm nothing new there we all have that problem. However, it began to sincerely freak me out when the swelling lasted all day.

I suddenly found myself drinking 30 glasses of water, avoiding more then 10 grams of salt, and looking in the mirror very, very closely!

It was when I was looking in the mirror that the puffy problem was no longer a worry but the fact that I was developing some sincerely fine lines! Where the hell did those come from!? Who put those there!!!!!!!!!!? I demand to know! I wanna talk to the man in charge!

I skipped my way over to the MAC counter and I casually asked about a concealer as my plan of action was to conceal those nasty buggers with industrial strength MAC concealer! Obviously my beloved Benefit Boi-ing wasn't doing the trick! I needed to get out the big guns!

Of course, my MA wasn't there at the time and although all the girls know me I ended up getting someone new. Which was fine. But it later became a problem when she was studying my eye area and poking around under there and calmly said..."You're very dry"!

MY GOD! WHAT?! Puffy, Wrinkles, and DRY!? What the hell else could go wrong!?

She proceeded to tell me about Clinque's All About Eyes Cream and later told me that it probably wouldn't work and I'd need something stronger. Gee thanks. Really helpful.

I skipped the concealer needless to say and headed directly across the way to the Clinque counter where I asked after an eye cream. I explained that I was dry, I had fine lines, and I had a bit of a puffy thing going on. I got a snarky reply that went something like this, "SO WHICH is it?!?!?!?"....um all of the above is that a problem? I was desperate otherwise I'd have told her to take the eye cream and stick it up her.....sorry.....

I ended up purchasing the Intense All About Eyes Cream...it's extra moisturizing or some rubbish like that. She proceeded to throw it in the bag, throw my change at my head, and usher me out so she could help another customer who probably didn't buy anything ANYWAY!

After using it for a week I decided it was way to thick. This is ridiculous! Did I really need to apply a layer of cream cheese under my eye daily?

I went back and returned it for the normal formula and proceeded to use that a week. It did nothing. I guess I wanted a miracle in 7 days!

Now over the course of my time middling around with eye creams I've gotten so many great replies to my questions it's borderlines on ridiculous. I'm wondering if these people even know anything about what they are selling!

The bad news is I've been through to many of these bad boys with absolutely no results!

This is what I've tried so far:
Clinique All About Eyes
Clinique All About Eyes Rich
Ole Henricksen Ultimate Lift Eye Gel
Murad Renewing Eye Cream
Dermadoctor Wrinkle Revenge Cream (Testing in progress....)
Patricia Wexler De-Puff Eye Gel (Testing in progress.....)
Serious Skin Care Nanofiller
Dr Denese Restoreyes
Amazing Superfil (Testing in Progress....)
La Mer Eye Concentrate

I'm sure there are more but I can't remember them all. My main reason for typing this up is I discovered an interesting little tidbit about eye creams.

It appears that eye creams make things worst instead of better! My eyes have gone from having fine lines, dryness, and puffiness to having a sunken in appearance, an exhausted look, saggyiness, milia (sounds like someone's name), and other problems!

I guess the moral of my story is that you have to seriously be careful how much you use, what you're using, and be conscious of how you looked before using the cream and how you look after!

We are now in March and I still haven't found an eye cream that works that great but I have worked out an interesting eye care regime that appears to have helped almost all my problems!

I've discovered a miracle product from Dr Denese entitled Hydro-Shield Serum. This contains everything you long for in an eye cream such as soy and retinol. It's also very gentle compared to other items I've tried out. It's highly moisturizing and although it promises to dry matte I find it doesn't do that but I use it before bed so I'm not really worried. It's a clear gel that comes in a pump bottle. One tiny pump should do both eyes because it's such an amazingly moisturizing gel that you don't need a ton of it. The formula is a clear gel and I glide it under my eyes. No patting here, at least for me. The formula is so slippery and slides so well you might as well just gently glide it across.

In the time I've been using it I've noticed a huge improvement with my fine lines and I actually think this has to do with the fact that it moistened my eyes so well. My eyes were so dry prior to using this that fine lines were much more noticeable. Now they are definately looking much better!

If you're looking to use this in the AM (I only use it in the PM) you'll have to wait at least 5 minutes because it takes about that long to dry and that could be a deal breaker for some folk! I don't use it in the morning for this reason! This is a serum so you can happily apply your eye cream of choice over it after dry down! I actually feel so moisturized that I don't apply my normal eye cream over it.

It deserves to be said that this is great for fine lines and dryness but does nothing for puffy eyes which is why I'm in lust and love with another product to shrink my puffy eyes down to size.

I'm pretty sure you have heard me raving about this product before but it deserves a re-mention. I was experiencing a problem with puffy eyes this Winter in a big way. It could be lack of sleep, eye strain, sinuses, or just general old age but I've had a bit of a puff here and there that I found irritating. I tried just about everything in the old maid's handbook but nothing seemed to work. Cold spoons, teabags, cold compresses...no I didn't try hemorrhoid cream...there is no way in hell I am putting butt cream under my eyes sorry but I have to draw the line somewhere!

When age old methods failed I turned to a few different gels such as Patricia Wexler De-Puffing Gel and Ole Henricksen Ultimate Eye Lift. The Wexler one just didn't do anything but the Ole one was successful in sealing my eyes closed for me. I've never experienced anything so sticky in my life! Wow.

My mate Rows sent me a package with some Boots Botanicals Ultimate Eye Lift Gel and the first time I used it I didn't see any results. I'm one of those people that want instant results, right away, NOW DAMMIT NOW! In a "unlike me" way I proceeded to keep using it for a week day and night. I never commit to anything that I don't notice some results with so this is a rare thing but I was desperate so I decided what the hell. It's a clear gel that I massage under my eyes every evening and every morning. Within a week's time I noticed a very big difference and I was no longer sporting serious baggage. Within a month or so of use my eyes had virtually cleared up. I still wake with a tiny amount of puff but it's pretty much gone after I get out of the shower. I still religiously use this night and day even though most of my puff is gone. It's very gentle, doesn't sting, hasn't caused any milia, and my eyes are looking refreshed and gorgeous!

I guess my promise of not being long and rambling has been broken! Sorry!

The moral of the story is even if you're 20 years old now is a good time to start treating your eyes to a good eye cream!

Do you use eye creams?

What's your favorite?

Which have you found effective?

Lush Easter Eggs

You may recall me babbling about Lush's Easter Egg Gifts a few weeks ago! If not do have a click here and here for the details!

Today I got my eggs in the mail! I was so thrilled they didn't crack! I had ordered three for myself and a few others as gifts! Can't wait to take a bath to use some! I was going to order from the UK but I had a gift certificate that was burning a hole in my pocket and the UK doesn't take US gift cards so I said I ordered from Lush NA and was shocked how quickly they arrived and all in one piece too!

Anyone get these?

Wanting them?

The Easter Bunny came early to the Muse's house!

Shu's released 17 new shades of it's Rouge Unlimited in a new formula entitled Crystal Shine. I'm dying to get my hands on some of these as they sound absolutely heavenly!

I adore Rouge Unlimited Lipsticks as they are so pigmented and gorgeous and the idea of combining that formula with shimmer and shine sounds amazing!

I wonder if these have a glossy fine finish!

I'm definately picking up a few colors and will review soonish!

MAC Beauty Powder Blushes First Impressions

I was lucky enough to get a few of the MAC Beauty Powders today! I'm pretty excited as they are bloody good! I got four of the eight and I'm currently wanting the rest!

They are terribly good and I must say I'm impressed with these for shizzle! I highly suggest motoring to your nearest counter or freestanding store to have a lookee!

I'm slightly puzzled over the "Beauty Powder" terminology and I'm thinking that's just a fancy word for blush because these are sincerely pigmented, silky, smooth, and as easily blendable as a blush so where the term "beauty powder" comes into play I'm clueless about. As I had mentioned in a previous post most of my beauty powders from MAC are either filled with shimmer or are sort of a matte highlight powder or touch up powder where as these are full blown blushes in my humblest opinion! I guess this is MAC's solution of combing two great products, blush and beauty powder, and coming up with one awesome product! On a side note these are pretty damn pigmented and pack a bunch so you might want to be very light with your hand during application!

MAC Beauty Powders from Past Collections

From Left to Right Barbie Loves MAC Beauty Powder in Pearl Blossom, MAC Fafi Beauty Powder in Belightful, MAC Novel Twist Beauty Powder in Sun Twist

Old Beauty Powder vs New Beauty Powder Blushes

These are smaller then standard powders I have or have come across. They are the size of a regular MAC blush and carry the same price tag of $17.50 USD. The product is extremely pigmented with a tiny sheen of pearl that really lights up my face! Within the colors released there are at least two or three you'll want to take home for your very own or you might be diseased as I am and want to collect them all!

The colors I ended up with were Joyous, Sweetness, Serenely, and True Romantic. Joyous and Sweetness are probably my fav of the four. Joyous is a candy peach color where as Sweetness is a bright bubblegum pink. Serenely is a deep desert, dusky coral with bits of brown and rose and True Romantic is Dusty Pink.

Two brushes were released as well with the collection one of which I'm currently loving. The 169 is LE and quite a gorgeous little brush to use with these powders. 169 is pretty similar to the standard catalog 168. The differences I noticed between the two were that the 168 is a fuller brush where as the 169 seemed less so. I already own a few of the 168's from various brush sets I've purchased so I'm quite pleased to now have the full size 169 in my beauty arsenal. This particular style brush is excellent for blush application, under eye powder application, touch ups, and setting powder on. I'm particularly loving the way this dusts the beauty powders on and gives me a natural flush to my cheeks! Very nice brush and worth taking a look at if you're in store!

From top to bottom: MAC 169 and MAC 168SE

All in all the collection is quite nice and I'm impressed! I'll be doing some FOTD pictures with the blushes on shortly so stay tuned!

Loving this collection?

Got any of the beauty powders for yourself?

Love the 169?

Benefit's Talk to the Tan

I'm not a big fan of self tanners, tanning, or anything else that has to do with the sun. I keep far away from bronzing, tanning, and anything else of that nature. I like my pure white skin very much thank you!

However, if you happen to love tanning and such you might want to see out Benefit's new tan in a tube entitled Talk to the Tan. As I recall Benefit used to have a similar product entitled Aruba in a Tube or something like that. Another equally scary product from what I remember!

But ado if you're dying for a tan in a tube do check out Benefit's newest product!

If you do try it I want details and a review! ;-) Curious minds how it works! I know my sister is dying to get her hands on this but she's the type that loves to look like burnt toast.

Babblings About Digital Cameras and Musings of Change!

Hey Guys!

I wanted to share something with you! I'm about to embark on the purchase of a new digi cam in April. I've been using my trusty Kodak and Sony for ages and I thought I needed something with a bit more meat. After carefully consulting with my digital camera guru, Vanessa, I decided to go with a Canon. She had recommend two solid models and after a bit of thought I decided to wait a little while and go with the Canon Powershot SD1100 which is releasing in April. I seriously don't need another digital camera as I have plenty in the "digital graveyard" in my closet where all old technology goes to rest (mice, keyboards, cameras, printers, my commadore 64, my Apple Lisa, etc...etc..). It appears, like the geek I am, that I develop emotional attachments to hardware and have a hard time throwing it away!

This particular model of the Canon looks very good. This is actually more a purchase for you guys then for me. I wanted something that would take high quality images of cosmetics, good bright photos of swatches, and close up shots. My old camera does ok with these things but I could definately use an upgrade! I normally avoid swatching because my camera takes such crummy shots and the colors appear wrong so hopefully the Canon will solve this problem and we'll end up with some good true to color swatch pictures.

Anyway!

Thought I'd share and tell you to be on the look out for better pictures coming to a blog near you very soon! I think this will be extremely beneficial when your unable to purchase Japanese cosmetics at retail. The jacked up prices don't give you an option to make a mistake with color if you know what I mean. So if you end up shelling out cash for Japanese Collections you'll at least have the tools you need (my swatches and photos) to make proper color selections when purchasing!

Most of you know that a majority of my Japanese cosmetics are purchased at retail cost. I have a few friends that live in Japan and they get me what I need and I do the same for them. But when you're purchasing online prices have a tendency to rise from $5-$10 USD or more!

A few other changes are also coming your way shortly....

Good changes I hope.

A new adventure awaits readers of Musings of a Muse some of which I think might be exciting!

I'm working on my own forum very soon so you'll have a place to chat to fellow readers, swap cosmetics, chat about brands, etc.....

There are many, many makeup forums around but I thought Musings of a Muse deserved it's own forum! So it shall be very soon! I've wanted to do this for a long time but I just haven't had the time but know it's in the works!

After much thought and consideration I've decided to start podcasting some of my posts. This should be live very soon depending on how much time I have to do it. Now you'll not only have the opportunity to read my posts but you'll also be able to listen to me babble about a collection, share my thoughts and opinions, and just do my normal giggle ummmm routine! Brace yourself while I try to remove the giggles and the "ummm's" from my vocabulary!

I've wanted to do this for a while and I thought it would be a fun and unique way to make my posts even more interesting!

I think that's about it for now! I hope you'll find all these new additions as exciting as I do!

Thanks to my old and new readers because this can't be possible without each of you!

Update: Camera is on the way! Amazon.com had listed it's release April 15 but thanks to Taryn for showing the Muse it was available on Best Buy! So we'll now have quality images soon! I hope it works well in low light situations and such! We shall see!

Cheers Taryn! Thanks for helping a Muse out ;)

Bioré Pajama Party: Bioré Skincare Review

This idea came to me today when I was talking to our little Cookie, Lilan, from the Daily Cookie. We were chatting back and fourth and she had mentioned she and her boyfriend had done a series of pictures using Bioré products last week. Honestly, guys, I begged and pleaded with our Cookie to please post these pictures and how much of a contribution this would be to the beauty blogging world! I tried! I really did! Let's hope my hard work pays off and we get to see Lil and the boyfriend doing their review of Bioré shortly!

For now I decided I needed my own pampering. It's been a long, hard day at work so I decided to treat my skin nice!

Pajama Party Provisions

As you may have noticed I'm on a budget beauty buying cycle lately and one item that I believe gives alot of bang for my buck is Bioré. It's one of the very select few brands from a drugstore that I trust and have found to actually work. Quite a few products in the line I love and I'm particularly in lust with what I can get from Japan in regards to Bioré. Seriously have you seen Japan Bioré products? Everything is all pink and sweet looking!

As I was saying I had a long day at work so facial time! Yay!

AWWWWWWWWWWWW the Muse is exhausted after her hard day at work! Her eyeshadow is smudged, her foundation is fading, her lipstick is long gone but her PJ's sure do match! The Muse is such a chic girl isn't she?

I'm a bit lazy and I'm really not in the mood for my full blown facial regime of removing my makeup but have no fear Bioré Daily Cleaning Cloths are here!

YAY!

Seriously, I think we all fall into a bit of a funk some nights and aren't too interested in spending alot of time removing our makeup! Especially when we just want to turn the lights off and go to bed! Daily Cleaning Clothes make that possible! Each cloth is pre-moistened with a cleaning solution that doesn't have to be washed off. Wipe it across your face a few times and it'll pretty much remove everything from your face. As you know I wear some bold shades of eyeshadow and this removes them without a problem! Although it doesn't do that good a job on waterproof mascara but seriously neither do MAC cleaning clothes so honestly that's not the fault of the cloth that's just the formula of your mascara!

Two clothes later and my face was happy, refreshed, and clean!

After I got all that gunk off my face I needed a seriously good scrubbing down. The winter weather is harsh and my skin is suffering from some serious dryness, flakes and all! Gross! Sooooooo I got me some Bioré Unclogging Scrub and scrubbed my way into nirvana. This is the first time I've used this particular scrub and I must say it's quite good. It does a fab job of removing flaky skin from my forehead and given time I imagine this will clear up the blackheads on my nose as well. If you're acne prone this contains salicylic acid to clear up any nasties you have keeping house on your face! It was a good scrub and did a great job smoothing out my face but I found it to be a bit drying. That could be because it's an acne treatment. If you're oily this may very well be a god sent for you as it's liable to dry up any oily bits on your face!

The formula contains little microbeads! See 'em? It also has a very fresh smell!

Now it was time for a bit of a facial! I adore Bioré self-heating mask! So good! This is seriously a fab mask! If you've never used this before you have to try it at least once! It's a one minute facial that you rub into your skin and as you rub it heats and fells so warm and cozy and lovely! It exfloliates the skin while detoxing it and removing any yuck that might be lurking in your pores plus it's good if your skin is oily! This feels wonderful in the Winter but I love using it in the Summer to combat oil on my forehead!

\

And since I love you guys so much I'm of course including photos of me wearing the mask...you'll probably find some use to blackmail me with them later.....

Scary Muse! BOO!

Of course after all this I had to go the extra yard and attack the blackheads hanging out on my nose! What better way to do that then with a Deep Cleaning Pore Strip? Pore Strips are God's gift to humanity. I've seriously never found a better product to remove blackheads. I scrub, and scrub, and scrub and I have seriously little success removing the blackheads from my nose that have taken up residence, built a condo, and have settled in with the kids. They stay there and never leave. Unless I go to a Spa and extract these chances are no product, expensive or inexpensive, will get these buggers to move up and out! However, I've had pretty good success it getting a nice cleanup using Bioré Deep Cleaning Nose Strips! Plus I like looking at the strip after it's been on my nose 8 minutes...is that morbid? Sorry too much info there! In all seriousness I really do have an excellent success rate with these. I'm not saying they get deeply embedded blackheads but they do a bloody good job of getting about 75% of mine and my nose looks alot less like a porcupine after use!

Yes, yes I know you want pics! More blackmail material coming right up!

Finally to finish off my little skincare party Bioré Pore Minimizing Lightweight Moisturizer. This is new for me. I normally don't stray from my current moisturizer but I was generally curious about this as it has an SPF 15. Honestly, as I get older I've been caring about having an SPF in my moisturizer and this is very light and silky and perfect for day wear. I'm not sure how much it reduced the appearance of my pores because I honestly have tiny pores anyway but in regards to the formula I'm pretty impressed. I travel alot and I love going on cruises and such and this would make an excellent daily moisturizer when out in the heat. It's silky, smooth, and very light weight plus it has SPF. When you're in a humid climate that's about everything you'd want in a moisturizer! Plus it's cheap as day old chips price wise! What's not to love? I'm too set in my ways to change it for my current moisturizer but as a backup when going on Holiday this will definately make an appearance in my traincase!

And finally here she is the Muse fresh faced, makeup less and simply Bioré clean! Wasn't that fun? I work my 30 years good don't I? Teehee!

Do you use Bioré?

MAC Beauty Powders Blushes

I just blogged MAC Fafi not so long ago but it feels like ages since we last discussed MAC doesn't it? It does however deserve to be mentioned that I'm enjoying how well MAC is doing with releases lately. They are spaced apart very nicely and I'm not seeing a huge flow of releases as we did last year. We seriously were borderline 3 collections a month or something last year and it was a bit too much for me to keep up with! But it's been almost a month since Fafi's release now and I'm liking the jive of MAC spacing it's releases apart! I hope they keep it up!

MAC has two new Collections up and available for purchase at the moment one of which I'll most definately be overindulging in myself! Obviously you can guess which one right?

Beauty Powder Blush!

I've heard so many rave reviews about the Beauty Powder Blushes and I'm definately picking up a few for myself!

The newest color story consists of eight beauty powders and two brushes.

I heart MAC Beauty Powders anyway and the idea of a pigmented beauty powder really thrills me. Most of the Beauty Powders I have either have a healthy dose of shimmer or are a matte color. Both of which are best used for highlighting! These new Beauty Powders are more pigmented so you can honestly get away with wearing them as a blush I'd say!

The colors appear very vibrant and bold so using them alone or to beef up your favorite blush will make the a cool multitasking tool to have in your beauty arsenal!

I'm currently lemming Joyous, Sweetness, and Serenely!

Each powder is $17.50 USD which is about a $3 difference from the standard MAC Blush. I believe these are about the same size as a MAC Blush as well and not the bigger compacts that some Beauty Powders have been known to come in!

I'm loving the look of the MAC 169 as well since it appears the perfect tool for application!

Honestly, I'm really wanting a few of these!

Want 'em?

Loving these?

Getting any?

MAC Strobe

MAC's newest color story, Strobe, is up and available at MAC if you're interested!

Strobe is actually a color story that's somewhat near and dear to my heart because it contains the Tinted Lip Conditioner Sticks.

A little history.....

My first venture into MAC was during the Sweetie Cake release and at the time they had offered Lip Conditioner Sticks and I had purchased one in the color pink resort. It had become a true favorite of mine and I toted it around everywhere. I've had to replace it three times since purchasing it by seeking it out on E-bay and paying way above retail for it.

My faithful friend, Pink Resort!

When MAC released Strobe I was over the moon at the prospect of getting my hands on new Lip Conditioners. I know a few people have ranted that they are sheer and just not worth the price and such but for me they are gold. I really love the natural look they give plus the moisturizing benefit alone is well worth the cost.

As you can see the packaging differs slightly from the previous release of lip conditioners! I'm really liking the new packaging which is on the right hand side!

I must admit that this year's releases aren't nearly as pigmented as my Pink Resort but I'm still loving the colors and the formula!

Strobe Current, Strobe Rays, and Strobe Kiss

If you're a big lover of smoothing your lips down with balms, chapstick, or just one for loving a very smooth, moisturizing lip treatment this may very well be what you seek! I seriously have a bad habit of not touching up lipstick and gloss so I throw one of these in my purse for quick touch ups. They make my lips feel great plus I'm not completely bare lipped!

Strobe is definately something you might want to check out! I'm pretty curious about the cream which promises to revive and refresh dull, tired skin!

Strobe is available now at MAC!
