Pieces of Life: The Economy Edition

Did you read the news today? Obviously you have considering I think we all watch it as it's such a train wreck we can't keep our eyes from it now can we?

Today's newscast is the demise of Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Saks....hello insanity!

Clickie!

Looks like our fav luxury retailers are barely keeping their heads above water at the moment. And finally we reach the pinnacle of no return.

What do you think?

It'll get better......?

No way, it's the long road home!

Tell the Muse!

Well, while I do think things are getting complicated, I think that, at least here in Portugal, the media is further complicating everything. I mean, all they talk about is recession, recession, recession... There are companies that are taking advantage of that to commit all sort of illegalities with their employees, like getting rid of unwanted ones, threatening them, illegal bankrupts... And people start to get scared, scared, then of course stuff will get worse!
I'm positive everything will get better in a couple of years, we've been through stuff a lot worse :) If everyone can deal with this peacefully, that is! And there's something everyone should do, which is ALWAYS save up some money, get it under your bed or something, because you never know when you'll need it... Either for unexpected expenses or for food.

That starts to make sense when you listen to this little newsy bit on NPR: http://tinyurl.com/beu4nq In a nutshell, an economist talks about how the wealthy aren't spending on luxury goods.

So long as Sephora holds out, I'll be fine. We all have to donate our $$ to Sephora to keep it afloat. Dig deep, sisters! Give till it hurts! :-(

hi Inês

Absolutely. The media definitely doesn't help and it really makes batters the confidence of consumers which in turn causes more chaos.

At the moment the insanity is beginning to turn into ridiculous :P

Absolutely agreed...it'll be a long haul but we'll get through it, hopefully stronger and better for it.

And yes absolutely....a nest egg is ALWAYS a good idea :-D

These stores, car manufacturers, electronic manufacturers etc are all reliant on consumer spending.

I watch BBC every afternoon and all i hear is recession recession recession. Obviously there are some people who are affect and those who aren't just yet are all tightening their belts.

who wouldn't when you hear this ringing in your head every night and day.

on the other hand if they weren't then if we were hit with redundancy / early termination then we'd be in deep sh*t having to sell everything on ebay.

I just hope things get better it's only quarter 1 of 2009 who knows what's going to come next!
