Musings of the Day: Packaging Rat
When you buy new makeup be it MAC or anything else, do you keep the boxes and packaging it comes with?
Are you a pack rat?
The Muse normally keeps special items in their boxes. And sometimes she even keeps packaging for expensive brands, for example all my Givenchy blushes and shadow quads are kept in their boxes even if they aren't LE. MAC boxes I normally toss unless it's a special packaging like FAFI or Barbie, etc...
I used to keep Bobbi Brown in all the packaging but lately I toss it out even LE palettes I find that I toss the boxes which surprises me considering how anal I am about my cosmetic collection.
Crummy packaging, even if the item is LE, normally gets tossed. For example Urban Decay's sometimes has cruddy plastic packaging on LE items and I just toss that out. I also do this with LE Japanese brands products such as KATE palettes that are LE...the packaging is just plastic so I normally toss it, same for Lavshuca.
I actually wish I can get out of keeping boxes and packaging because it's such a hassle to store, organize, and even find items I'm looking for when everything is in little boxes.
I guess this makes me a bit of a packaging rat and a bit of a tosser depending on brands and such!

I throw it out! My husband is a horrible pack rat and I've been trying to break him of it. We're just now making progress :P So I sure as heck don't want to add to it!
my drawer is FILLED with boxes. i don't know.. just have this habit of keeping them be it skincare or makeup -_-"
I normally keep the boxes nearby for the first week or so, in case it doesn't work out with the product and I have to return it. After that, I put the boxes/packaging aside and only throw them out once the actually product has been used up. Weird, I know.
Hey Muse. I usually take the packaging off as soon as I buy it. lol. In the street in the store it doesn't matter. I make sure to throw it in the trash/recycle though :) My husband is a minimalist and he hates that I own so much makeup so I try to keep it to a minimal in terms of packaging. The only packaging I have are my smashbox rapture palette and my stila barbie tube. The smashbox because I'm waiting to visit my sister to give it to her. It's new. I was tempted to use it but I figured she would really find it useful. I'm still a makeup packrat. I have so many lipgloss/lipsticks it's scary.
I'm a makeup packaging hoarder. I'm a packrat in general, but I started really keeping EVERYTHING when I started buying things from Sephora, in case I needed to return something.
I've got boxes full of boxes now. I need to force myself to get rid of some things. :/
I throw it away. The one time I tried to save a box was from Smashbox's Wicked Lovely creme liner trio/loose shimmer powder. I thought the box was so cute with it's pink color and black vines. I found it annoying to open it when I wanted to use it so I tossed it.
I toss it! I've got enough crap as it is, I don't need to add to it.
I usually keep the boxes around for like a month or so until I manage to convince myself to toss them! Haha!
I usually keep the packages that are super pretty, like Anna Sui stuff with the classic floral pattern, there was that super pretty limited edition powder case, the case has metallic rose pattern with royal blue background, the box that came with it have the same design too...super pretty.
Actually, beside the Anna Sui boxes, I tossed everything else,Stila palette, paul n joe lip gloss or benefit stuff...the inside are pretty cute but they never pay attention to the boxes though...
I keep the packaging on very few things, though I used to be a pack rat. Items with domed tops that are hard to stack and are in boxes I keep that way, but everything else goes.
I do it pretty much like you, keep LE packaging and especially prety or expensive ones like Chanel and Dior. The others get tossed.
I keep the boxes of my more expensive items, like Dior, Givenchy, Mac, etc. Also if I haven't used something yet, I will keep it in the box - things sell for more on Ebay if they're BNIB ;). Not that I have sold any make up on Ebay yet. :) (I've been planning to, because there have been a few buying mistakes, but never got around to it.) Cheap make up usually doesn't even come in boxes, so I guess maybe there's not actually that much that I throw out. Oh well.
i never did until i realized how out of control that corner of my room got.... then i creaned it up, and ever since i just keep the really nice ones!
I usually keep packaging from Japanese cosmetics brand. So if the packaging ain't cute, it usually belongs to the bin.
Collect the boxes for expensive brands. I find it keeps the packaging of the cosmetics safe and dark until I actually use them. It's also easier to organize because they're all box-shaped rather than the actual shape of the product. For example, it's easier to keep track neatly store the Guerlain Meteorites in their boxes rather than try to figure a way to safely stack their circular forms. I can't put them on their sides without them rolling away but in their boxes I can and save space.
I throw all the boxes away!
I've never posted here before but I simply had to chime in on this one. I have kept packaging in the past and thought I needed to get over it. That being said, it's just not me to throw away anything beautiful or completely functional. I have a bottle of Chanel perfume that's been in it's original box since I bought it in Paris in 1989. Same for the Chanel lipsticks I had. Sometimes the box protects the product nicely. Sometimes I just love the box. Even in the grocery store, I can be sucked in by beautiful packaging, particularly candies and teas. Damn you, marketing people!!!!
Now as a mom, with the desire for less bulk, I've thrown away more. But your post inspires me to go back to more of those old ways. I am hereby embracing my inner cosmetic packaging pack rat.
I started to keep all the boxes because it is easier to stack them -- like lipstick, eyeliner or lipgloss, which would roll around if left on their own

When I first met him, he had every single national geographic magazine dating back for 5 years, at least! And all the game programming ones, etc. I threw them all away :P

Sounds like you're a minimalist :) I wish I was more so...but I'm working on it! I agree though it's rather annoying having to open a box to use the product!

Totally agree....I ended up buying an organizing though to keep them all upright as I was getting a bit nutty trying to find a color with all the boxes teehee!
