Kat Von D Tattoo Concealer: Conceals Ink or Not?

The Muse has reviewed Kat Von D Tattoo Concealer and although she liked it she wasn't so sure about it hiding ink. I'm not denying this concealer is hells all pigmented but if I had any ink I'm doubtful it would do anything to conceal it.

However, Sephora put it up to the ultimate test and concealed Kat's OWN tattoos using the concealer.

Jump ahead for a peep!

Ok, so interesting results here. Check it:

That's pretty incredible but a little, tiny bit hard to believe it was just the concealer they used plus whoa how much did they have to use? And what's that strange reddish mark? She doesn't have that in the picture where her tats are in place but after they use the concealer she looks bruised? It doesn't look like it's ink that was being concealed either because in her before photo she doesn't have tats in that general area? And her neck is all red? I'm such a nit picker aren't I? Just curious what happened.

I dunno!

What do you think?

I wonder if she had some sort of allergic reaction to it!

Muse, if you'll remember, I mentioned once that I bought the Kat Von D tatoo concealer to see if it would cover up a tattoo that I have that is about 85 percent lasered off. Well, I tried it this weekend and...I can't really give it my full endorsement. I used the light color because I have pale skin and it was still a bit too dark I think. Let's just say--it wasn't Hello Flawless, LOL. (BTW I LOVE that stuff--thank you!!!) I'm going to try the Kat Von D again, though, and maybe try some loose powder over it. Part of the problem is that I really don't have any color left from my tattoo--but I do have a bit of discoloration/scarring from the lasering. So it's prolly not fair of me to say it doesn't work. You know how much I LOVE all of her other products so I hate to be all negative on this one! I'm hangin' in there!

Those reddish parts are strange looking. I think that maybe since there were no tattoos in those areas, they didn't use the concealer and whatever else there...so those areas ended up looking red compared to all the pale concealed areas? Maybe the lighting was different than in the before pic so the unconcealed areas looked red? I myself find it hard to believe that they covered all that with just the concealer.

Umm. Whoa. That made her look super sickly. I think all those "red" spots are just her skin without the makeup! What good is it to cover a tatt, if the skin is going to look so weird? NOT a good look. Sorry Kat!

I think the reddish blotches on her abdomen and upperchest/neck area are just hte only spots they didn't have to apply the concealor to so it's her natural skin tone showing up starkly against the matter, concealed areas. Atleast that's how it seems to align with the before picture, as you pointed out.

Holy moley! That's one heavy concealer! I'm wanting to try it now, but I can't get it in the UK... :(

I think the bruise-ish mark is just the parts on her body where she didn't have any tattoos and so remained concealer free, and makeup free skin tends to have more of a red tone than concealer colors.

Thank gawd, I wasn't the only one distracted by the big red splotches. And, yes, it looks like it would cover up a smallish tat, but not an entire body - she looks really odd in the after pic. I am sure it is just the amount that was used that makes it look weird.

Oohlala! Agent Provacateur lingerie!

PS: Holy bait-and-switch Batman! Is that really what Kat Von D looks like without big hair and even bigger makeup?!? You would not recognize her out on the street!

dearest Muse, the redder areas are where they didn't use any concealer. you're right-there aren't tats in those places. it's just her tan skin showing after they buffed the concealer everywhere else!!!

fun challenge anyway, they must have used A LOT>

what happened was the concealer didn't perfectly match her skin tone, making the rest of her skin appear red. :)

The concealer even straightened her hair! ;-) That's one hell of a mighty potion, he he. And all this time I was thinking I needed to rely on dear ole John Frieda to get me some straight locks.

Actually, I think it did a decent job, though you can tell she has a TON on. I think the weird darker marks are where she didn't have a tattoo previously. Notice her chest isn't tatto'd nor is a funky shaped spot on her stomach. . . where is where two of the largest funny spots are. Obviously, they didn't match the concealer to her skintone, since it sticks out so much, but I think overall, it's okay. ~amylou

she doesn't have any tattoos where her red spots are =) they didn't have to use any concealer there! it does look pretty funny though!

Pretty scary. It looks like she was poofed by a giant powder puff! I guess it does prove a point, but I'm not sure how practical it would be. I guess no one would be looking to cover up their entire body anyway.

She looks like she's wearing prosthetic arms! No way was it just the concealer. They probably had a vat of MAC body paint hiding backstage. :P

I'm totally stunned by the bruised look in the after-concealor photos. I had to scrutinise it and I think it's areas where there is no concealor. ie. the camera picked up the colour contrasts and it becomes weird in the photograph ... that's the best "theory" I can come up with. LOL. In my mind, this means the concealor is actually quite pigment and has a thick/white cast.

I think that they used the concealer only on her tattoos but it does not match her skin tone so the red patches are her bare skin...

K, so I don't know whats going on in those pics. The big red splotch on the stomach, the red chest, and the weird stuff going on on her legs. And those arms looks almost freakish.

Ok, I'm gonna say maybe they were finished concealing everything. How many little tubes of concealer were used?

I do love the Kat Von D Tattoo Concealer too, but I don't think it would hide ink that well.

I think since she didn't have tattoo's in those areas they didn't cover it up with concealer. I guess that is her natural skin color??
Anyway it looks like they must have used a vat full of concealer on Kat :P
I wish there was a video accompanying the pictures. Now that would have been truly amazing :)

i think the red is the colour of her skin naturally.
they must have used a concealer that was too light for her.

Hi Muse! Long time reader, first time commenter! I'm pretty sure that's Kat's actual skin colour -- that's why her chest, where she has no tattoos, is all red, while her tummy is only partly red. You can see some patches on her legs, arms and back, too. I'm guessing she actually looks pretty chalky and dead in person with all that concealer, they must have slathered her in the stuff. Cheers!

It looks like they have only used the concealer on the parts of her body that have tattoos, making it look a bit patchy in the parts they haven't covered.

Pretty outstanding coverage though!!

hey Bonnie!

I dunno? It's weird. The red splotches aren't ink that's coming through the concealer so I don't get what those are?

Thanks for telling us as I don't have ink but I did kinda sorta think that it wasn't going to do anything in the ways of covering up tats. w00t glad you love hello flawless!

Oh hells I so understand, her line is incredible I just think it was jumping the gun by saying this could concealer circles and ink....it really isn't a product I'd choose to cover up tats.

let us know the progress :-D

its crazy how much her tattoos, HEAVY makeup and crazy hair conceal (no pun intended) what she really looks like. I mean in that second picture with her hair straight, tattoos gone, and moderate makeup, she looks like a totally different person. She looks like she could be a soccer mom or something.

the "reddish" areas are her skin, since there's no tattoo in that area, they didnt conceal it. its not reddened though, it just looks darker because of the yellow concealor.

June 26, 2009 at 3:43 PM
Blogger Cole said...

What it looks to me is that those reddish areas are where they didn't put on any concealer and, compared to the concealer, her natural skin looks rather red (because the concealer is awfully yellow). If I had tats, I might use a product like this but I agree that they probably had to use a lot on her.

Just caught up on the new season of LA Ink and one of the episodes has the photoshoot for her new purfume range - Sinner - rocker/tat's/big hair etc and Saint - "angelic" & no tat's etc. It also shows them applying the product. Kat is proud of her tattoos and I think it is a great product as I am sure there are people out there that may need to cover one up for a number of reasons. New season looks to be interesting! Great blog too :)

Hey, have you seen the LA Ink show where they had this? It's all concealer, they showed them putting it on, and it is LAYERED hardcore. The parts on her stomach that look red are where they didn't have to put any concealer, so the camera flash really made it stand out.

Wow. Seriously people..? The "red spots" are CLEARLY not bruises or rashes, it's just the areas Kat doesn't have tattoos so they didn't use the concealer there, it's her normal skin color - the concealer doesn't match her color.

July 31, 2009 at 2:47 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

the "red" spots are her actual skin color, they just look red in comparison to the concealer. it looks that way because the concealer has not been blended yet. when my gf puts tattoo concealer on her wrist tattoo for work, until she blends it to match her skin color it looks just like that. if u watch the episode of LA Ink when she does the photoshoot u'll see what i mean. so sexy.
